Prior to the introduction of the Motion Picture Production Code (or Hays Code) in 1934, Hollywood films were often extremely shocking in terms of their content, even by today's standards. Sex, violence, adultery, alcoholism, drug use, murder and all manner of other illicit activities were commonplace in what is now known as Pre-Code cinema.
